PEDAL POWER TAKES OVER JOZI FOR THE THRILLING VIRGIN ACTIVE 947 RIDE JOBURG

Get ready cycling fans! On Sunday, 17 November 2024, Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium will be buzzing with excitement as more than 10 000 cyclists line up for the 28th edition of the iconic Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg.

Riders will navigate a picturesque course that weaves through some of the city’s most famous landmarks, from the Soweto highway to historic gold mine dumps, all while soaking in Jozi’s vibrant atmosphere.

Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg is the world’s second-largest timed cycling event. This 97km race is a celebration of Joburg’s resilience and beauty, and a true test of endurance for all involved. This year’s race takes on even greater meaning as it coincides with the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s democracy, making it a celebration of the freedom and diversity that define Johannesburg. With the largest prize pool for a single-day cycling event in Africa, the 2024 Ride Joburg is more than a competition—it’s a testament to the city’s enduring spirit and its goal to reestablish itself as Africa’s leading hub for sporting tourism.

Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Dada Morero, has extended a warm welcome to all participants. “On behalf of the City of Johannesburg, we wish all cyclists a safe and thrilling race. This event embodies the vibrancy of our City, and we are proud to host so many cyclists from around the globe. May this journey through our streets be as exhilarating as it is inspiring.”

He adds that the City will proudly field its own team of cyclists, #TeamJoburg, to promote a healthy lifestyle and champion cycling as a sustainable mode of transport. “By encouraging cycling, we’re taking a step toward reducing the city’s carbon footprint and building a healthier, greener Johannesburg.”

“In addition to thrilling prizes, the event also emphasises safety, with full road closures and a pedestrian-friendly route for spectators,” says Mayor Morero.

Thousands of cyclists are expected to gather at FNB Stadium at the crack of dawn, with the race starting at 5am on Sunday. Race Director Fritz Pienaar promises a challenging and exhilarating course, packed with twists, turns, and exciting climbs and descents. “This event is not just a race; it is a testament to the spirit of unity and the love of cycling. It’s an occasion that encapsulates the heart and soul of Johannesburg and showcases our beautiful city in a positive and healthy light. It brings together people from all walks of life, demonstrating the power of community and a shared passion for cycling,” says Pienaar.

“Whether you’re a cycling enthusiast or a newcomer, this event is an opportunity to push your limits and, most importantly, celebrate the joy of cycling. Join us for what promises to be the safest race in the country, and don’t forget to smile — fans from around the world are watching live on social media.”
