SALGA marks International Day of Sport
On 23 August 2013, the United Nations (UN) proclaimed that the 6th of April every year will be observed and celebrated by the UN member nations as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.
Sport is an important enabler of sustainable development. SALGA recognise the growing contribution of sport to the realisation of development and peace in its promotion of tolerance and respect and the contributions it makes to the empowerment of women and of young people, individuals and communities as well as to health, education and social inclusion objectives. The UN foresees that sport will play an important role in pursuing each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) and “encourages Member States to give sport due consideration in the context of the post 2015 development agenda”.
The recognition of the Sport Day at the international level has contributed towards the elevation of the consciousness of Sport by South Africans on the multi-pronged importance of sport.
SALGA’s theme for the 2017 Sport Day is “Healthy living starts with me”.
The CEO, Mr Xolile George, calls on our members, partners and all SALGAN’s to take the change path upon themselves by leading healthy lifestyles and to participate in different activities and sporting codes as part of the International Day of Sport.
