SANDILANDS’ HERICOS LEADS PIRATES TO VICTORY

Wayne Sandilands saved two penalties as Orlando Pirates snapped their winless run in the Absa Premiership with a 2-1 win over SuperSport United at Emirates Airline Park on Saturday.

Goals from Vincent Pule and Zakhele Lepasa led the Buccaneers up to fourth spot on the log standings, a point and place behind Matsatsantsa who found the back of the net through Luke Fleurs.

Pule fired Pirates in front with 29 minutes on the clock. Thembinkosi Lorch teed up his attacking partner who found the target from range with a powerful left-footed shot.

SuperSport pulled level before the halftime break as Fleurs headed home from a corner-kick to send the teams into the changing room deadlocked at 1-1.

Lepasa made an immediate impact off the bench to fire the hosts back in front just short of the hour mark. Lorch turned provider once more to pick out the former TS Galaxy forward who timed his run to perfection before beating Ronwen Williams in the SuperSport goal.

Gamphani Lunga then won SuperSport a penalty moments after emerging off the bench, but Sandilands denied Bradley Grobler who missed from the spot for the second game running.

Matsatsantsa were awarded another penalty in the 72nd minute, but Thamsanqa Gabauza was also denied by Sandilands who made a good save. The two saves proved decisive as the Soweto giants held on for all three points.
