SIPHO MKHWANAZI SHARES MUST-VISIT SPOTS FOR YOUR EASTER WEEKEND GETAWAY

Content creator, writer and avid traveller, Sipho Alphi Mkhwanazi, joined the Sasol Mzansi Tour road trip in March. Based on his experiences, he highlights some unmissable sights and attractions in Mpumalanga and Limpopo for you to consider for an Easter weekend.

With the Easter holidays swiftly approaching, all of us are looking forward to a few days off after the fast-paced and eventful first quarter of 2024. It is unfortunate that so many of us perceive travel as a luxury that is far-fetched and inaccessible, but I’m here to prove that idea wrong.

Exploring the vast, diverse beauty of South Africa is an experience like no other. With stunning landscapes, a rich cultural heritage, and incredible wildlife, a trip through this beautiful country promises unforgettable memories. On the Sasol Mzansi tour, we took a seven-day road trip between Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

If you’re looking for an inspiring road trip, you could follow our route through some of the most interesting landscapes in the country. Or pick and choose from them to create an itinerary for a wonderful day trip or for an enjoyable weekend away.

Here are the highlights of our trip:

Magoebaskloof is a picturesque region known for its scenic beauty and outdoor activities. Here, you can hike through lush forests, visit the beautiful Magoebaskloof Canopy Tours for all things ziplining and hiking, or simply relax and take in the stunning views.

Next, you can make your way to Tzaneen, a town known for its fertile farmlands and vibrant markets. Sample some of the local produce, including delicious tropical fruits and freshly brewed coffee. Continue your journey, passing through Hoedspruit, a gateway to some of South Africa’s most famous wildlife reserves.

If your budget allows and you like the finer things in life, give the Radisson Safari Hotel a try. Take a game drive through the Pride Lands game reserve to see the splendour of our amazing Big Five and if you’re keen, a dinner under the stars will leave you breathless and asking for more.

Next, head to White River, where you can explore quaint shops and eateries before heading to the breathtaking Bourke’s Luck Potholes. These unique rock formations are a marvel to behold, created by centuries of rushing water carving and shaping the landscape.

Don’t miss the adrenaline rush of The Big Swing in Graskop, where you can take a leap off the edge of a cliff and swing through the air with stunning views of the lush forests below. Be sure to stop at the iconic Three Rondavels, rock formations that resemble traditional African huts. No visit to Mpumalanga would be complete without taking in the panoramic vistas of God’s Window.

Next up, head to the charming Dullstroom, nestled in the rolling hills of Mpumalanga. Here, you can indulge in gourmet dining, explore craft shops, or try your hand at fly-fishing. We lodged at the heritage-rich Highlander Hotel, where our brilliant Chef Benny treated us to a four-course menu with wine pairings.

Finally, make your way to eMalahleni, a vibrant city known for its rich history and cultural heritage. Visit the Witbank Dam for a relaxing day of boating and fishing or explore the town’s many museums and galleries to learn more about South Africa’s fascinating past.

By the end of your seven-day journey, you will have experienced the best that South Africa has to offer, from its stunning landscapes to its vibrant culture and warm hospitality.

Our road trip was a week of beautiful experiences, new friendships and incredible memories that will live on for years to come.
