SKIPPER BAR AND ADIDAS REDEFINE STREET CULTURE WITH ‘WE OWN THE STREETS: ICONS OF THE FUTURE

Street culture continues to take centre stage as adidas and Skipper Bar launch We Own The Streets, a platform dedicated to celebrating the culture creators, style pioneers, and everyday leaders shaping South African identity from the ground up. Rooted in township communities, the campaign honours the icons who have defined culture within their spaces and spotlights the rising individuals they believe will carry that legacy forward.

The campaign is an ode to ownership of culture, style, and the streets that shape who we are. Through deeply personal storytelling, We Own The Streets highlights how street and kasi culture is not a passing trend, but a powerful expression of confidence, resilience, and belonging. At its core, the narrative centres on three foundational icons whose work represents innovation, leadership, and meaningful impact within township economies and youth culture.

The campaign is led by:

  • Luvuyo Rani, CEO of Silulo Ulutho Technologies
  • Godiragetse “Godi” Mogajane, Founder of Delivery Ka Speed
  • Bulelani Balabala, Founder of the Township Entrepreneurs Alliance

“Street culture is not borrowed; it is built, lived, and owned by the communities that created it,” says Kaboomo Mgibi-Marshoff, Senior Brand Manager at Skipper Bar. “With this campaign, we are shifting the focus to community‑led stories and celebrating authentic kasi pride. It is about recognising those who don’t wait for permission to lead and ensuring that as we celebrate established icons, we are also creating space for the next generation to rise and own their moment.”

One To Watch: The Next Icons of the Streets

As part of the campaign’s commitment to legacy-building, each icon nominated an individual they believe represents the future of street culture through entrepreneurship, innovation, and relentless work ethic.

  • Godi Mogajane honours Tsholofelo Monyapao, recognising his pivotal role in the development and growth of Delivery Ka Speed. Tsholofelo is celebrated for consistently showing up with energy, determination, and commitment, embodying the hustle and resilience that define township entrepreneurship.
  • Luvuyo Rani honours Sindile Mavundla, founder of Khaltsha Cycles, a dynamic one‑stop bicycle shop dedicated to providing quality, affordable bicycles while promoting cycling as a sustainable and accessible mode of transport. Sindile represents a new wave of energetic young entrepreneurs using innovation to drive social and environmental impact.
  • Bulelani Balabala honours Patric Thokkie, a Soweto‑born entrepreneur and founder of Lifeway Imphatho Brands, the food and beverage company behind the popular Loxion Fruit Juice range. Patric’s journey reflects the power of homegrown brands built from township roots to national relevance.

“These One To Watch nominees will be recognised and equipped to continue showing up and owning their streets, just as those before them have done,” adds Mgibi-Marshoff.

“The We Own The Streets campaign serves as a reminder that the township is where dreams are built and creativity thrives,” says Nimisha Ghela, Omni‑Channel Activations Manager at adidas. “At adidas, we believe that true icons do not gatekeep influence they pass it on. This campaign is about celebrating that exchange between generations.”

We Own The Streets positions the streets not just as physical spaces, but as places of expression, ambition, and future‑shaping ideas owned by those who live, build, and lead within them.
