SPORT IS THE WINNER AS THE INAUGURAL GAUTENG COMMUNITY GAMES CHAMPIONS ARE CROWNED

The inaugural Gauteng Community Games have crowned their first champions across four categories, who pocketed a combined prize money of over R350,000.00 (three hundred and fifty thousand).

An epic battle featuring 8 netball teams, and 32 football teams in the Masters; Ladies; Gogos and Males categories ensued until late in the evening of Saturday, 16 March 2024 at the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto Campus.

G- Star from Sedibeng in Sebokeng, were the big winners in the male football open category, defeating Soweto Super United for the title and earning themselves a cool R100 000.00 in the bank.  One of the most enterprising sides, Soweto Super United, had some of the youngest players in their squad aged between 18 and 24 who earned the team R50 000.00 for coming second.

The ladies’ football saw Kenneth Football Club from Thembisa in Ekurhuleni claiming the title along with an R50 000 cheque by overcoming Manikie Sakwe Football Development in the finals, who took home R25 000.

The super-fit Mogale Viking from the Westrand are Champions of the of the Golden Oldies/Gogos. They defeated Okuhle Ladies from Ekurhuleni and walked away with R20 000 while their opponents pocketed R10 000.

In the Masters’ category, Matarien from the Westrand claimed the championship title along with an R30 000 cheque by defeating Mofolo Masters, from Soweto who pocketed R15 000.

The hottest action was in the netball court where the sensational Black Eagles from Ekurhuleni claimed the title and R40 000 prize by defeating Sedibeng’s silver Ferns in an epic finals match.

About the Gauteng Community Games Cup

The Gauteng Community Games Cup tournament is an extension of the ongoing Community games commonly organised during the Festive and Easter seasons throughout the province. These are well-known for presenting opportunities for talent identification, and community social cohesion among fans and supporters of the games.

The provincial tournament is meant to boost the profile of Community Games in Gauteng to the level of the province.  The prizes will allow teams to build and strengthen their squads throughout the year, to be ready for the Festive and Easter seasons.
