Stellenbosch FC beat TS Galaxy 2-1 at the Danie Craven Stadium in a DStv Premiership match on Saturday afternoon.

As a result, Stellies finished the season in the sixth spot on the league standings and they qualified for next season’s MTN8.

Galaxy, on the other hand, failed to qualify for the MTN8 as the Rockets finished 10th on the DStv Premiership standings.

Stellies launched attacks from the first minute and they won several free-kicks in the Rockets’ half as the hosts pushed for the opening goal.

The deadlock was broken in the 16th minute when Devon Titus netted after Fawaaz Basadien’s free-kick was parried away by goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi and Stellenbosch were leading 1-0 at halftime.

The Rockets pushed for the equalising goal after the restart and they got it through Lindokuhle Mbatha who netted in the 48th minute to make it 1-1.

However, parity was only restored for a minute as Junior Mendieta scored after being set up by Basadien to hand Stellenbosch a 2-1 lead much to the delight of the home crowd.

Mendieta’s goal proved to be the winning goal as Galaxy couldn’t beat keeper Lee Langeveldt in the latter stages of the game and ultimately, Stellenbosch won 2-1.
