SuperSport United brushed aside Bidvest Wits 2-0 in an Absa Premiership game which was played at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Tuesday night.
The victory took Matsatsantsa to position two on the league table, while the Clever Boys slip down to third on the standings.
The visitors threatened first through Elias Pelembe, who unleashed a shot from range which was well-saved by SuperSport goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse just a minute into the game.
In the 21st minute, the ball fell for SuperSport winger Aubrey Modiba and he sliced his effort over the crossbar without troubling Darren Keet in the Wits goal-posts.
But the former Bafana Bafana international was tested on the half-hour mark by SuperSport forward Thabo Mnyamane, whose half volley was well-saved by shot-stopper.
At the other end, Daine Klate’s lob found his Wits teammate Eleazar Rodgers in the SuperSport box and the latter forced Pieterse into a magnificent save – finger-tipping the ball out for a corner-kick.
It was end-to-end stuff as Keet pulled off a wonderful save to deny SuperSport forward Dove Wome in the 40th minute to ensure that the first-half ended goalless.
Frank Mhango had a chance to break the deadlock five minutes into the second-half, but the Wits forward’s shot was easily saved by former Kaizer Chiefs keeper Pieterse.
However, it was Clayton Daniels, who broke the deadlock in the 64th minute following a scramble in the Wits box and the Bafana international made it 1-0 to SuperSport.
The momentum was with SuperSport and they managed to double their lead in 69th minute and it was in-form Mnyamane, who scored his fourth goal in four competitive matches.
Wits substitute Mogakolodi Ngele nearly pulled one back for his side in 77th minute, but SuperSport shot-stopper Pieterse produced a brilliant save to deny the forward.
Pieterse made a stunning save on the line to deny Wits debutant Siboniso Gaxa in the 86th to ensure that SuperSport walk away 2-0 winners on the day.
