THE ‘SLEEPING BEAUTY’ RETURNS TO JOBURG THEATRE

Sascha-Lee Joseph

The enchanting story of “The Sleeping Beauty” is set to grace the Joburg Theatre stage once again. With its stunning choreography and compelling narrative, this production promises to captivate audiences and brighten the mid-winter season.

Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema, CEO of Joburg City Theatres, lauds the production for showcasing the exceptional talents of both local and international dancers.

“We are thrilled to present the timeless magic of ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ on our stage this winter. The collaboration of such diverse artists emphasises our commitment to delivering world-class performances and highlights our dedication to cultural excellence,” says Nduneni-Ngema.

Complemented by Tchaikovsky’s enchanting music performed live by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, this production marks a significant milestone for Joburg Theatre.

Under the artistic direction of Sophie Sarrote, an Italy-based ballet mistress, the production is infused with expertise and visionary artistry. “The Sleeping Beauty” will be presented at the Joburg Theatre from Friday, 28 June to Sunday, 7 July 2024.

Rehearsals are in full swing at the Joburg Ballet studios, as the company prepares to bring one of the most iconic ballet classics to life. Joburg Ballet is delighted to join forces with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Chad Hendricks. The orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s sweeping romantic score at all performances, except on Thursday, 4 and Friday, 5 July at 11:00.

The tale of “The Sleeping Beauty” is one of good triumphing over evil. A malevolent spell causes a princess to prick her finger and fall asleep for a hundred years. In true fairytale tradition, the kiss of a handsome prince ensures a happy-ever-after ending to this story of love victorious.

Five impressive casts, featuring Joburg Ballet’s leading dancers and three guest artists, will alternate in the principal roles.

Joburg Ballet offers a range of affordable ticket options for “The Sleeping Beauty,” including half-price tickets on opening night, two morning matinees at just R110, and discounts for pensioners, groups, and Friends of the Ballet.
