TS SPORTING BLOW GAC TITLE RACE WIDE OPEN

TS Sporting have blown the GladAfrica Championship title race wide open after defeating log leaders Richards Bay in one of eight matches played across the second-tier league this midweek.

Sporting overcame the Natal Rich Boyz 1-0 at the Kabokweni Stadium on Wednesday, with Decide Chauke scoring the only goal of the game. The result means the top three teams are covered by just two points with three rounds of the season remaining: Richards Bay lead with 45 points, Royal AM have 44, and Sporting are third on 43.

Sekhukhune United in fourth are just two points further back after their 2-1 away win over Pretoria Callies at Bidvest Stadium, with goals from Khaya Mfecane and Nkanyiso Madonsela.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Cape Town All Stars claimed a huge win in their fight against relegation, defeating bottom-of-the-log Bizana Pondo Chiefs 3-2 away at King Goodwill Zwelethini Stadium to move five points clear of the relegation zone, Steenberg United remained in the red zone after they could only draw 1-1 at Free State Stars, while Cape Umoya United and Uthongathi FC both claimed 1-0 home wins over Polokwane City and Pretoria University respectively.

Tuesday’s action saw relegation-threatened Cape Town Spurs (formerly Ajax Cape Town) held 1-1 by Royal AM at Parow Park Stadium – with Thendo Mukumela netting the equaliser for the hosts – while a clash at Giant Stadium saw JDR Stars best Jomo Cosmos 2-1 thanks to an opening strike from Vusumuzi Mncube and an own goal from Ezenkosi defender Christopher Komane.

The GladAfrica Championship will continue with a full round of fixtures on the coming weekend of 8-9 May, with the headline match seeing Royal AM hosting TS Sporting.
