POLOKWANE CITY HOLD WITS IN SIX-GOAL THRILLER
The weekend’s Absa Premiership action saw Bidvest Wits drop two points in their thrilling 3-3 draw at Polokwane City, while SuperSport United picked up a much-needed win.
Wits fought back from two goals down to lead 3-2 away to Rise and Shine on Sunday, but a late equaliser from Jabu Maluleke – who also netted against the Clever Boys earlier in the campaign – saw the spoils shared at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
As a result of the draw, Wits could be overtaken at the top of the log if Orlando Pirates pick up a convincing home win over Baroka FC on Tuesday evening.
Also on Sunday, goals from Bradley Grobler and Teboho Mokoena saw SuperSport end a three-game win drought by defeating Bloemfontein Celtic 2-1 at Lucas Moripe Stadium, sending Matsatsantsa up to seventh place on the table.
The mini round opened on Saturday afternoon with Chippa United securing a vital 2-0 win over Maritzburg United in their ‘basement battle’ at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Tebogo Tlolane and Andile Mbenyane scored the goals to see the Chilli Boys open up a four-point gap between themselves and last-placed Maritzburg.
Later the same day, Mwape Musonda scored a seventh goal in Black Leopards’ last seven league matches to salvage a 1-1 draw at home to Golden Arrows at the Thohoyandou Stadium.
The Absa Premiership will continue with two midweek matches on Tuesday 22 January.
