CALLIES BEAT JDR STARS ON PENALTIES TO ADVANCE

Pretoria Callies beat crosstown rivals JDR Stars 5-4 on penalties (0-0 after extra-time) at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Sunday afternoon to book their spot in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals.

Following two hours without a goal, Callies held their nerve from the spot to become the third team from the GladAfrica Championship to book their spot in the last eight where they joined Cape Town All Stars and Richards Bay FC.

The Romans played with 10 men for close to an hour following Phumlani Gumede’s sending off for a second-bookable offence in the second half of regulation time, but the Hammers Boys failed to pounce on their numerical advantage and ultimately succumbed to defeat.

Earlier, second-tier Richards Bay came from behind to defeat TS Sporting while Chippa United and Cape Town City lock horns in an all DStv Premiership clash on Sunday evening.
