CASTROL OBSERVES TRANSPORT MONTH-AND IS PROUD OF ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH DISTRIBUTORS WHO PUT SAFETY, QUALITY AND VALUE FIRST

Transport – on roads, rails, air, water – is vital to our economy. Transport moves people to work, children to school and goods to market, driving commerce and trade, and enhancing quality of life. In October, we celebrate Transport Month in South Africa, recognizing the role of transport in our economy and the people and businesses that help make it safe, reliable, affordable and sustainable. Castrol products like VECTON and CRB TURBOMAX with DURASHIELD, with their focus on safeguarding and protecting the longevity of high-performance assets, have made a sizable contribution – but we could not have done it without the dedication of our distributors.

In 2024, Castrol marks 125 years as a global brand. Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) distributor, Southern Natal Lubricants, has worked with us for over 30 of those years. Wozani Berg Gasoline, through its distribution business Estrimanzi has been a Castrol lubricants distributor for a decade. Their service commitment to their customers goes beyond just selling them a solution that will get the job done; they choose to sell Castrol for a reason, and they educate their customers on the advantages.

A shared commitment to sustainability

Wozani Berg Gasoline has grown as a petroleum products sales and distribution company for southern Kwa-Zulu Natal to a national fuel sales and distribution company. It established Estrimanzi to secure supply and ensure business continuity. As an authorized distributor for Castrol, Estrimanzi supplies lubricants in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Southern Cape regions.

Says MD of Wozani Berg Gasoline James Gregory, “Our decision to collaborate with Castrol was rooted in shared values and complementary goals. There is a mutual recognition of the importance of innovation in the automotive industry and a shared commitment to sustainability and excellence.”

“Castrol is known for its cutting-edge lubricants, dedication to performance and ongoing research,” says Ryan Nel, Sales Manager at Estrimanzi. “Their investment in research ensures we access cutting-edge products that keep us competitive and grow our visibility and credibility in the marketplace.”

Castrol’s advanced engine oils, for example, improve machinery performance and reduce maintenance costs with longer oil change intervals. “This kind of collaborative relationship fosters trust and reliability in today’s fast-paced business environment, positioning us strategically for future growth in an evolving market,” says Nel. “And there’s immense gratification in knowing that your expertise plays a crucial role in keeping people safe as they navigate their daily lives.”

Nel is also keenly aware of how new trends will radically change the industry. He notes that connected and smart mobility solutions – from vehicles with internal AI and sensor-driven maintenance programs to autonomous (self-driving) vehicles – will change how consumers engage with their vehicles and transportation services. This will compel automotive service providers to adapt their business models. Sustainability is another driver.

“Sustainability has become a core focus within the transport sector as stakeholders recognize the importance of reducing their carbon footprint,” says Nel. “This includes not only the shift towards electric vehicles but also improvements in fuel efficiency for traditional vehicles, investment in renewable energy sources for charging infrastructure, and initiatives aimed at recycling materials used in vehicle production. Many companies are adopting sustainable practices throughout their supply chains to meet consumer demand for environmentally friendly products.”

Castrol is well positioned to participate in this rapidly approaching future with investments in global technology hubs in China, Germany, and the Americas. In the UK, Castrol is planning a $60 million investment in a new, state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) battery testing centre and analytical laboratory.

Education is key

Southern Natal Lubricants was approached by Castrol in 1994 to become a distributor of its products for KZN. It has since grown to six depots in Marburg, Kokstad, Pietermaritzburg, Empangeni, Dundee and now Durban.

“The auto service business is highly competitive. It is constantly growing and advancing technologically. With the shift toward electric vehicles and environmentally friendly products, the future of the oil industry challenging but exciting,” says Southern Natal Lubricants director Steven Evans.

He notes that key challenges include higher price sensitivity, less brand loyalty, and more competition from unknown brands. “However, Castrol’s new technologies favor and focus on environmental issues, which positions us well for future success,” he adds. “Customer education is key. By using the correct lubricants our customers eliminate extra costs they may incur when using inferior products.”

As customer service expectations have risen over the years, Southern Natal Lubricants has increased its resources and capability to service every area of its business. It also offers pricing support to stay competitive. “Our goal is to be the first name in our customers’ minds when they think oil and lubricants, says Evans. “Customer service is everything – we aim to be there to meet our customers changing needs.”

Performance and care

Castrol’s constant focus on listening to what its customers need and delivering the best products to meet those needs is what makes this brand so credible. But it’s the distributors that connect with customers and community on the ground. Castrol celebrates these people and businesses for their ongoing contribution to improving people’s lives.

Says Wozani Berg’s Gregory: “Working in the auto service industry is not just about maintaining vehicles; it’s about being part of something larger – a mission to ensure reliability and safety on our roads while fostering connections with both customers and fellow professionals.”
