RONWEN WILLIAMS NAMED ONE OF THE BEST AT CAF AWARDS

Mamelodi Sundowns’ shotstopper, Ronwen Williams was the centre of attraction at the 2024 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards on Tuesday evening in Marrakesh, Egypt, as he scooped two awards following what has been a successful year for him.

The 32-year-old scooped two accolades, including the Men’s Interclub Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year at the prestigious awards. He became the first South African to win the Goalkeeper of the Year award. He also becomes the second Premier Soccer League (PSL) player, after his teammate, Denis Onyango, to scoop the Interclub Player of the Year.

Williams has had one stellar year, having guided Mamelodi Sundowns into the 2023/24 CAF Champions League semifinals. He guided Bafana Bafana to a bronze finish in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and helped the Brazilians to lift their 7th consecutive league silverware in the 2023/24 season.

As he received the two accolades, Williams gave credence to his family, teammates and coaches for the support throughout his career.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank my family, my parents, my two siblings, my partner as well as my kids for being supportive throughout my career. Thank you so much to CAF for this recognition. It has been an amazing year for me but I couldn’t have done it alone. Thank you to all the players, coaches and the technical staff that have been with me throughout my career. I know this win will inspire millions and millions of South Africans to believe in themselves, to push boundaries and never forget your dreams are valid” the Gqeberha-born player said.

These awards are a true reflection of Williams’ hard work as well as the performances he displayed for both Mamelodi Sundowns and the South African Men’s National team. The entire Mamelodi Sundowns family would like to congratulate the shotstopper for his achievements!
