The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Councilor Dada Mororeo, is pleased to announce the successful resolution of the recent contractual dispute with its service provider, Afrirent.
This resolution will enable the resumption of crucial services provided by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) to the citizens of Johannesburg.
The Mayor has clarified that the grounding of vehicles by Afrirent was not due to a failure to make payments, but rather the result of administrative inefficiencies. Specifically, inadequate management by internal officials led to delays in the submission of invoices for payment, creating an avoidable contractual dispute.
In light of these events, the Executive Mayor is committed to ensuring accountability and has taken decisive steps to address the issues at hand. He has directed the Chief Operations Officer and the Group Executive Director of Group Corporate and Shared Services to compile a comprehensive report detailing:
1. The measures required to prevent the recurrence of such administrative failures in the future.
2. Recommended actions to hold those responsible accountable for their role in this situation.
The Executive Mayor underscores the importance of all officials being held to account in maintaining the integrity of the City’s operations.
“All those responsible must be held to account,” Mayor Morero stated. “It is imperative that we restore public confidence and ensure the smooth operation of services that our communities rely on.” The Mayor also reassures the residents of Johannesburg that the JMPD services have now resumed, and all necessary steps have been taken to rectify the situation and improve operational efficiencies.
The City remains dedicated to transparency and will keep the public informed as further developments unfold.
