REGION A KICKS OFF THE YEAR WITH ENERGY AND ENTHUSIASM

From jumps and splits to high kicks, Region A came alive on Saturday, 18 January 2025, as the Sport and Recreation department hosted a high-energy aerobics class at Busy Corner Shisanyama in Ivory Park. The free session drew residents of all ages, who were eager to break a sweat and embrace a healthier lifestyle.

Waking up early on a weekend isn’t easy, but for many in Region A, it was worth it. This two-hour workout not only burned calories but also set a positive tone for the day. With upbeat music and the vibrant energy of coach Mervis Mkhize, the founder of Trimax Fitness Club, participants were in for a treat. Local taxis hooted in support, and even passersby couldn’t resist joining the action.

“Physical activity benefits everyone, regardless of age, gender, or fitness level,” Mkhize emphasised, kicking off the session at 7am. She highlighted the far-reaching benefits of regular exercise, including a stronger immune system and protection against chronic illnesses.

“It’s important to start healthy habits early,” Mkhize added. “When kids grow up active, they reduce their risk of developing many health issues later in life. Fitness isn’t just about looking good — it’s about feeling your best and staying healthy.”

The aerobics session is part of the City of Johannesburg’s initiative to promote healthy living across the City, with a particular focus on reaching communities like Ivory Park.

“This platform engages citizens of all ages, helping them make positive lifestyle choices,” said Mandla Mahlangu, Deputy Director of Sport and Recreation for Region A. “Aerobics is a fun, effective way to live a longer, healthier life while staying away from harmful habits like substance abuse. It’s never too late to start.”

Participants left the session feeling energised and motivated. Mapule Tlapi, a 29-year-old Ivory Park resident, beamed with enthusiasm. “I feel so accomplished and rejuvenated, my energy levels are through the roof, even though it was a bit intense. No one ever regrets a good workout.”

For others, the session marked a fresh start after the indulgence of the festive season. “It’s time to burn off all the holiday weight,” joked Nontokozo Sithole, 36, from Kanana. “I hope these sessions continue. Big thanks to the City of Johannesburg for keeping us fit and healthy year-round.”
