Gauteng Community Safety, MEC, Nkosi Malobane, has issued a stern warning against people who abuses alcohol. Speaking at a recent briefing in Melrose, She said, “There is no doubt that alcohol and drugs are amongst the key drivers and generator of major crimes in the province. It is also apparent that there is less regulation of the alcohol industry, resulting in many trades flouting the law by trading all night, serving alcohol to minor and some allowing for the consumption of drugs in their premises”.
Malobane also acknowledged that, people abuse substance such as drugs alcohol for varied and complicated reasons.
“ It is clear that the society pays a significant role, that include murder, rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, cable theft and the destruction of our infrastructure”.
“We will shortly develop a targeted strategy aimed at arresting the abuse of alcohol and drugs in the province” said the MEC.
She pointed out, that, health related costs, increasing burden on social security, children becoming orphaned are but some of the consequences resulting from this phenomenon.
“Whilst we understand the economy value of alcohol trade, the social costs of alcohol abuse far outweighs whatever other considerations that may be attached to the trade”.
