Mabena ends Baroka’s Cup run

A late strike through Ndumiso Mabena helped Platinum Stars beat Baroka FC 1-0 at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night in their Nedbank Cup last 16 tie.

The win for the visitors means they are now through to the Nedbank Cup last eight and the hosts are out of the competition.

Milton Dlamini’s men took the game to their visitors as they dictated the proceedings from the early stages of the encounter, but failed to penetrate Dikwena’s defence.

However, in the 14th minute, they came close to breaking the deadlock when a cross from the right saw Mzwanele Mahashe failing to connect with the ball with only goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela to beat.

Six minutes later, Bonginkosi Ntuli nearly caught Bakgaga’s defence napping as he showed good control in the box before heading his attempt over the crossbar.

With both sides exchanging dominance in search of goals, neither could produce clear-cut scoring chances at halftime.

There was not much difference in the early stages of the second stanza as far as chances were concerned, but it was Mxolisi Kunene who was handful for the Phokeng-based in the 65th minute.

However, he blasted a wonderful opportunity over the crossbar following good movement by the Premier Soccer League newcomers.

Towards the 70th minute, the match was an end-to-end affair and Dlamini was called to produce a fine save to deny Tintswalo Tshabalala from a well struck shot in the 69th minute.

Substitute Mabena took matters into his own hands in the 85th minute with a brilliant attempt from a distance only to hit the crossbar.

The first five minutes in extra time saw Robert Ng’ambi wasting a wonderful chance from point blank range following good work by Ntuli down the right flank, as his shot went inches wide of the right corner.

With less chances in front of goal, Dikwena were reduced to 10 men when Sphamandla Mlilo was shown his second yellow card in the second half of the extra time after a dangerous foul.

However, Cavin Johnson’s men were finally rewarded in the in the dying minutes of the extra time when Mabena unleashed a rocket which bounced to beat Dlamini, handing Dikwena a late winner.
