BETWAY PREMIERSHIP UPDATE: DOWNS TO LOCK HORNS WITH MARUMO GALLANTS

FREE BETWAY PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE STADIUM ENTRY TICKETS UP FOR GRABS FOR MAMELODI SUNDOWNS VS MARUMO GALLANTS CLASH

Sixth placed Mamelodi Sundowns could leapfrog to the top four in the Betway Premiership standings tonight. But this can only happen if they collect maximum points in their clash against Gallants at Loftus Verveld Stadium in Pretoria this evening at 19:30.

This delayed match was supposed to be Downs home Betway Premiership season-opener initially set for 1 August but had to be rescheduled due to the passing of their player Jayden Adams and logistic factors.

Bafana Ba Style have played two games since the opening of the 2026/27 season and have collected four points after a 3-2 win against TS Galaxy and a 1-1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs.

Meanwhile Bahlabane Ba Ntwa are languishing 14th on the table with one point, after a loss and one draw in two matches. As things stand,  a win for them could see them move six notches up.

According to Sundowns defender, Grant Kekana, as the team heads into a new week, last weekend’s lessons will help them improve as they prepare for the meeting against Phuti Mohafe’s side. Furthermore, the Pretoria-based side will want to continue with their unbeaten record against a Gallants side they have beaten six times and drawn twice with in their last eight league encounters.

“The preparations are going well. We started on a good note and there’s a lot of positives we walked away with in our last game. It’s now all about building from where we left off. So, we are quite ready for our first home game of the season in the league,” Kekana said, as he looked ahead to the meeting.

Kekana also emphasised on the team’s objectives, as they kick-off a new season. One of their main objectives being returning the Betway Premiership silverware back home, amongst winning all cup competitions.

“Obviously, we won only one trophy last season, so this season – with the additional players we signed – we are looking to challenging and competing for more trophies than we did last season. We need to remember what we did last season and how to improve this season, so we can get our chances at winning the league.”

Kekana concluded by encouraging the Yellow Nation to come and support the boys as they return to their turf. He said: “we would also like to urge the supporters to come in numbers and come early. We have a few surprises for them and we look forward to making them proud on Wednesday.”

Google stats show that Mamelodi Sundowns completely dominates the head-to-head record against Marumo Gallants, having won around 10 to 11 matches with zero official regular-time losses, alongside a few draws.
