Kaizer Chiefs and TS Galaxy shared the spoils in what was an eventful 2-2 draw in the DStv Premiership on Wednesday night, as Keagan Dolly provided a moment of magic to secure a point for his side.
As the game kicked off at the FNB Stadium, Chiefs immediately took control of the ball which penned Galaxy back in the first five minutes. In search of space between the lines, Ashley De Preez latched onto a well-weighted through ball by Njabulo Blom and calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net in the 6th minute.
With a great degree of urgency, Galaxy immediately went on the attack, seeking an equaliser by launching numerous shots from range. However, the Glamour Boys held their own in warding off Galaxy’s attacks around the 10 minute mark.
With 15 minutes on the clock, Chiefs pressed on for a second goal but remained patient in their build up play. The likes of Yusuf Maart, Keagan Dolly and Khama Billiat often connected in attack and showcased positive movement in the final third.
In an early substitution, Sead Ramovic summoned Bernard Parker from the bench just before the half-hour mark. A couple of minutes later, the Rockets drew level, with Parker latching onto a loose ball in the area after a corner kick.
Chiefs’ defensive frailties were exposed yet again, as Djakaridja Traore put the travelling outfit ahead five minutes before the break. After a teasing cross into the area, Traore’s towering header in the centre of the goal proved to be too powerful. The referee then called time on the first 45 as the Rockets ended the half on a positive note.
The Soweto giants began the second half on the front foot and swiftly searched for an equaliser. Dolly and Billiat took charge but the Galaxy backline remained resolute in fending off the Glamour Boys. With moans and groans from the supporters in the stands, the home side struggled to infiltrate the Galaxy defence.
With an hour of football played, Chiefs remained on the attack and held the ball for large periods of the game. Having been awarded a number of free-kicks around the Galaxy penalty area, Chiefs looked to draw level from set-piece situations but were unable to make the most of their goal scoring opportunities.
The game reached a tacky period with around 20 minutes to go, with neither side able to string consecutive passes together. In adding to the back and forth, a number of late challenges were made by both sides, which slowed the pace of the game down considerably.
In a sheer moment of brilliance, Dolly equalised for Chiefs with a classy free-kick effort on the edge of the Galaxy penalty box with 10 minutes to spare. Soon thereafter, coach Arthur Zwane rang in a couple of changes, with Dillon Solomons and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo brought into the fold.
Despite numerous attacks as the game came to a close, Chiefs were unable to get the winner as the game ended in a 2-2 stalemate at the FNB Stadium
