DOMINANT DOWNS BOOK QUARTERFINAL SPOT

Mamelodi Sundowns proved too strong for Mathaithai FC as they secured a 6-0 win in a Nedbank Cup Last 16 match played at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday night.

The reigning DStv Premiership champions eased into the quarterfinals of the South African FA Cup, while their ABC Motsepe League (Free State province) opponents bowed out of the tournament.

Masandawana got off to a flying start as they grabbed two quick-fire goals through their experienced attackers Bradley Ralani and Themba Zwane inside the first four minutes of the one-sided encounter.

Ralani scored from the rebound after his initial attempt was blocked by goalkeeper Mbali Tshabalala from close range with the dribbling wizard making 1-0 to Sundowns in the second minute.

The former Cape Town City winger then provided the assist when Sundowns took a 2-0 lead in the fourth minute as his low cross from the right was turned home by stand-in captain Zwane.

Maithathai did launch a few attacks, but shots from Moeketsi Sephiri, Sabata Manele and Lebohang Letsane were all gathered by keeper Reyaad Pieterse with ease and Sundowns were leading 2-0 at the interval.

Masandawana continued their dominance in the second-half as Thabiso Kutumela netted from close range to make it 3-0 to Sundowns in the 66th minute after Kermit Erasmus’ shot had hit the crossbar.

Kutumela then completed his brace when he rounded Tshabalala before firing into an empty net to extend Sundowns’ lead to 3-0 in the 72nd minute with substitute Lebohang Maboe providing the assist.

The hosts were running riot in the closing stages of the encounter as Maboe marked his return from a long-time injury with a superb goal from range to extend Sundowns’ lead to 5-0 in the 84th minute.

Andile Jali also made an impact from the bench as the former Orlando Pirates star was afforded space to pull the trigger from range and he beat Tshabalala with two minutes left sealing Sundowns’ emphatic 6-0 win.
