A month into its run, it’s clear: kykNET’s Beter as gister resonates with viewers through its honest and heartfelt storytelling. We caught up with Elton Landrew to unpack what being part of the show meant to him, how he connected with his character and what he hopes audiences take away from it.
Elton Landrew plays Tariq Cupido, a grieving husband and father who unexpectedly finds himself building a relationship with his curious granddaughter he got to know after his daughter’s passing, a journey that slowly encourages him to open his heart again.
What does being part of Beter as gister mean to you personally?
It was such a wonderful, memorable experience to work with great directors Corné and René van Rooyen, whose passion and vision brought this beautiful story to life. Working alongside the amazing cast as well as our crew and production team will always remain close to my heart. A special mention to the young children on set, especially Alexis Newman, who has stolen viewers’ hearts. I quote from one of the excellent articles the show has received so far that read “The story is told in Afrikaans, but the themes deal with fatherhood and family bond themes that are universal.” And to know I was part of that is a privilege and an honour.

From a father’s perspective, what similarities do you see between your character on the show and who you are in real life? Are there any values or life experiences that you bring into the role?
I do not have children of my own, but I’ve been fortunate enough to help raise my late sister’s two sons into the young men they are today. Being their uncle has been one of my greatest blessings and has also helped me with the approach to the role I play on the show.
What do you hope viewers take away from your character?
The message is a universal one which deals with themes of loss, regrets, changes and difficult challenges. Whether toward ourselves, in life or especially with loved ones, the takeaway can be that things can always be made ‘Beter as gister’ [better than yesterday] if we are willing to take the time to learn how to make it better tomorrow.
