FUTURA SPECIAL SCHOOL’S 3RD ANNUAL AUTISM AWARENESS BIG WALK & FUN DAY A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

The City of Johannesburg proudly acknowledges the overwhelming success of the 3rd Annual Autism Awareness Big Walk & Fun Day, hosted by Futura Special School on Saturday, 18 April 2026, in Ridgeway, Johannesburg South.

Despite overcast weather and light drizzle, the event drew an inspiring turnout from learners, parents, educators, community members and stakeholders, demonstrating a strong collective commitment to raising awareness, promoting inclusion, and supporting individuals on the autism spectrum.

The day began with a symbolic walk around the school premises, where participants were awarded medals in recognition of their involvement. Volunteers played a critical role in ensuring the safety and smooth running of the event, reflecting the strong spirit of community collaboration.

Attendees enjoyed a wide range of activities designed to engage and educate. These included fun games, jumping castles, slides, painting sessions and interactive exercise activities. Children also participated in sensory play experiences, such as sandpit castle-building, while a dedicated sensory exhibition showcased items by autistic learners, offering insight into how they communicate and express their abilities.

The event also featured vibrant entertainment, including marimba music, dancing and appearances by mascots, creating an inclusive and joyful atmosphere for all families present. Food and product stalls, as well as commemorative T-shirts, contributed to the festive environment.

A key highlight of the day was the meaningful engagement between parents and caregivers, who shared personal experiences, challenges and triumphs. These conversations fostered a sense of solidarity and mutual support. One parent reflected on the importance of such platforms, noting that hearing others’ journeys provided perspective and encouragement.

The event also provided an opportunity to challenge misconceptions surrounding autism. A powerful message delivered during the programme captured the spirit of the day: “From stigma to strength, from barriers to belonging, from misunderstood to understood.”

Notably, the launch of the book “Nyeleti and Her Quiet Strength” by author and parent Nthabiseng Phooka added a deeply personal dimension to the event, highlighting the lived experiences of families raising children on the spectrum.

Encouragingly, there was a visible increase in the participation of fathers, marking a positive shift in caregiving dynamics and reinforcing the importance of shared parental responsibility. Organisations focusing on fatherhood support also played an active role.

The event was further strengthened by partnerships with key stakeholders, including the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), Clinix Health Group, VUMA, Vuyolethu’s Haven, and the City of Johannesburg’s Sports and Recreation Department, among others.

Futura Special School’s Autism Awareness Walk continues to grow as a vital platform for advocacy, education and community-building. It reinforces the message that autism is a journey that does not need to be walked alone.

The City of Johannesburg commends all participants, organisers and partners for contributing to a successful and impactful event that continues to break barriers and build a more inclusive society.
