Gauteng’s Class of 2024 achieved an overall 88.4% pass rate in the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, a major improvement from 85.4% in the previous academic year.

Addressing the 2024 Matric results announcements ceremony in Johannesburg, Basic Education Minister, Siviwe Gwarube announced Johannesburg West District as the top performing district in the country with a 97% pass rate.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Education MEC Matome Chiloane were in attendance together with various officials and stakeholders.

Gauteng achieved a total of 66 979 bachelor passes from Quintile 1 to 3 schools, with 67% of these coming from disadvantaged communities.

The Class of 2024 achieved 319 651 distinctions, an increase from 253 807 distinctions achieved in 2023. Gauteng Province came in third with a 5.3% increase.

“This is the highest matric pass rate in the history of our country and should be a moment of great pride and celebration for all of us,” said Minister Gwarube.

South Africa’s class of 2024 achieved a 87.3% pass rate, which is the country’s highest since the dawn of democracy. The pass rate increased by 4.4% from 82.9% in 2023.

Minister Gwarube made several commitments, such as universal access to quality early childhood education programmes by 2030, protecting teaching and learning time, as well as supporting teachers.

“During 2025, we will be reviewing the Post Provisioning Norms as a matter of urgency to ensure that they account for our drive to achieve universal access to quality Grade R and our strategic focus on improving reading and calculating in the foundation phase.

“By prioritising updates to the National Catalogue of Learning and Teaching Support Materials for the Foundation Phase in 2025, Provincial Education Departments and public schools will be able to purchase textbooks, learning materials and equipment.

“If we are to improve the quality of education outcomes, we need to protect teaching and learning time, ensuring that our teachers are at school and teaching for the entire day, for 230 days per year, to ensure adequate coverage of the curriculum,” concluded the Minister.

Gauteng Provincial Government is committed to improving the achievements of the Class of 2024 with a core focus on Mathematics, Physical Sciences as well as Accounting and Economics.

Providing extra curriculum interventions such as extra classes, virtual lessons and supporting learners, ensuring they are provided with resources including the National School Nutrition Programme.
