GAUTENG E-GOVERNMENT TO UNVEIL 30 MORE SITES CONNECTED WITH GOVERNMENT FREE WIFI

One of the efficient and fastest growing department in Gauteng, e-Government is leaving no stones unturned in making sure it ticks all the boxes in their service  delivery list. This is the same department led by effervescent and indefatigable MEC Bonginkosi Dlamini who  recently celebrated his first 100 days in office wilth a well deservedly announcement of a partnership with Vumacam showcasing the impact of technology-led initiatives on crime reduction across the province.

The event, included a visit to the state-of-the-art network control room, where attendees experienced firsthand the innovative surveillance technology that has become central to Gauteng’s crime prevention efforts.

Fast-foward, as part of its 100 days in office, this department is expected to roll our more good news for the people of Gauteng soon that will transpire in a media tour in Ekurhuleni.

The Gauteng Department of e-Government is mandated to provide internet connectivity across Gauteng as part of modernizing Gauteng communities through the Gauteng Government WIFI named Gauteng Provincial Network (GPN).

As a result, the department will be unveiling 30 more new sites connected to the Gauteng Provincial Network under the phase 3 of the project which commenced in the financial year 2023/2024. The connected sites include schools, libraries, hospitals, clinics, and community centers.

Since the launch of the WIFI project in 2014, more than 1200 sites across Gauteng are connected and it is anticipated that by the end of the financial year 2024 / 2025, a total of 353 sites will be provided with Wide Area Network (WAN) and 250 sites will be turned into WIFI hotspots.

The media tour will take place on Thursday, 5 December 2024 in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni. The tour is also essential to publicize GPN sites in the area aimed to benefit the community of Daveyton. On the day of the tour, 2 sites will be visited in order to provide a firsthand experience of the Gauteng Provincial Network. These sites include Daveyton Main Clinic and Lesiba Secondary School.

The key role of the Gauteng Department of e-Government is the roll-out of a network infrastructure that will connect government facilities, including schools, hospitals, offices and economic zones.

 It endevours to: create an enabling platform and support service; enable GCR entities to deliver e-Government Services; establish a GCR e-Government governance structure to drive priorities, policies, standards and regulations; promote the usage of e-Government services; stimulate the ICT economy through facilitating incubation and innovation; and encourage public and private partnerships for the development and roll-out of e-Government services.
