HEIDELBERG COMMUNITY GETS A VALENTINE’S DAY HEALTHCARE

Heidelberg District Hospital marked Valentine’s Day with a gift of healthcare as Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, unveiled the newly refurbished General Female Ward and the first-ever Neonatal Unit for the hospital. These upgrades will significantly improve access to specialised care for women and newborns in the Sedibeng District.

MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko emphasised the importance of reproductive health and antenatal care, urging expecting mothers to prioritize check-ups. “A healthy society starts with healthy babies. Some neonatal conditions cannot be prevented, but many can be detected early through antenatal care. Expecting mothers should monitor their baby’s development, detect complications early, and reduce risks during delivery,” she said.

The General Female Ward now has 33 beds, improving access to care for medical, surgical, orthopedic, gynecology, and oncology patients. The Neonatal Unit, the first of its kind at the hospital, has 13 beds and will help alleviate pressure on referral hospitals.

Heidelberg Hospital CEO, Dr. Itumeleng Molatlhegi, highlighted its impact, saying, “The unit will enable neonates to receive immediate required medical care and emergency attention while awaiting transportation to higher levels of care. Mothers will be able to care for their newborns within their proximity, saving on the cost of traveling to other institutions.”

This unveiling brings much-needed relief to Heidelberg and reinforces the province’s commitment to quality, accessible healthcare.
