On Friday 21 April 2023, Shoes of Wisdom: a JL Shoes Moshoeu Foundation ended off the Mo-Shoes-4-U Campaign season with an inspiring and informative morning where the Foundation was joined by Foord Asset Management, the Charlotte Maxeke Academy, Moshoeu family, Shoes Moshoeu Academy, Hip-hop artist Skillo, Sports Journalist Robert Marawa, Football Legends Mike Ntombela, Nhlanhla Kubeka and other male role models who visited and read to and with boys at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. By reading the donated children’s books, the father figures were able to engage with the children about the basic concepts of finance and investing in the future.
We are proud to announce that at the end of the Mo -Shoes-4-U Campaign season 2022/2023, Shoes of Wisdom commemorated Shoes Moshoeu’s legacy of knowledge and goodwill by reading to and with boys and presenting a total number of five thousand and twenty (5020) children’s picture books titled More than enough and Little by little to five (5) Primary Schools in Soweto, nine (9) paediatric wards and one (1) library at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. The books were proudly donated by Foord Asset Management.
The Mo-Shoes-4-U Annual Campaign
The Mo-Shoes-4-U campaign is a Shoes of Wisdom initiative which runs annually from November 9th to April 21st aiming to honour its founder John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu’s legacy of knowledge and act of goodwill. During the Mo -Shoes-4-U Campaign season, Shoes of Wisdom collaborates with like -minded individuals and organisations to donate a minimum of nine hundred and eleven (911) boys soccer boots or school shoes, cultivate a culture of reading among boys ages 6 to 9 years old, and work with football legends and male role models to read to and with the boys.
The Academic and Philanthropic John Lesiba ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu
John Lesiba ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu was not only a football wizard, but he was also an avid reader, academic, and had a heart of gold. When anyone, on or off the field called him to help, he responded to the call with a sense of urgency hence he wore jersey number 91 in football, short for the emergency number 911 which was his favourite number, representing a man of action and speed. His kind and gracious nature also matched his actions; he often loaded his car with boxes of brand-new soccer boots which he donated to children. Shoes’ philosophical characteristic was recognised by getting featured in Professor Es’kia Mphahlele’s book titled “A Lasting Tribute”, also by his Ambassadorship role in multiple reading and academic invested initiatives. He started having an interest in books during his primary school days when he read a book titled Benny and Betty at the age of eight. In his adult years, he frequently found opportunities to read to children and bought books to give as gifts.
Shoes of Wisdom’s 10th Year Anniversary
On the 5th of March 2023 Shoes of Wisdom officially marked a decade of sowing seeds of wisdom. In an effort to emulate ‘Shoes’ act of goodwill, zest for knowledge, and to celebrate a decade of impact, Shoes of Wisdom challenges all who can to match the gift of ten thousand (10,000) books donated by Foord Asset Management with boxes of new soccer boots or school shoes for boys ages six (6) to eighteen (18) years old. The donor of the shoes is requested to write a “Dear Son” letter/note of encouragement, put it inside the box with the shoes and follow @shoesofwisdom on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter for more information and updates. The collected shoes and books will be given to the beneficiaries at the Mo-Shoes-4-U Fun Walk/Run event on the 9th of December 2023 where we will celebrate with a purpose.
