HUMAN SETTLEMENTS DELIVERS EKHAYA GARDENS AFFORDABLE HOUSING

The launch of Ekhaya Gardens by the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements,  Anthea Leitch, marks a significant milestone in addressing the pressing need for affordable housing in Johannesburg. This social housing project, spearheaded by the Johannesburg Housing Company (Joshco), provides 333 rental units equipped with essential amenities for comfortable living. The development, with a construction cost of R133,247,367, reflects Joshco’s commitment to offering quality affordable housing solutions to Johannesburg residents.

Despite facing delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project has now come to fruition, offering not only housing but also catering to the needs of the handicapped community with specialized units. Security measures such as biometric fingerprint access, CCTV surveillance, and electrified fencing ensure the safety of residents around the clock.

Leitch emphasized the significance of this project, highlighting the importance of safe, affordable housing as a fundamental human right. The overwhelming response from the community, with 27,555 registrations received for the 333 units, underscores the acute demand for affordable rental accommodation in Johannesburg, particularly among those earning between R1,850 and R22,000 per month.

Ekhaya Gardens’ strategic location near the Roodepoort CBD and various amenities adds to its appeal, promising convenience for its future residents. The event garnered interest from locals, particularly those from nearby informal settlements, demonstrating the community’s eagerness to secure housing in the development.

As the keys are set to be handed over to the first beneficiaries, the success of Ekhaya Gardens serves as a testament to the city’s commitment to addressing the housing needs of its residents and fostering sustainable communities.
