JDA ADVANCES PHASE ONE OF COSMO CITY SUPER STOPS AND NON-MOTORISED TRANSPORT FACILITIES

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, is making significant strides in implementing Phase One of the Cosmo City Super Stops and Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) Facilities project.

With overall progress at 70% completion, this initiative underscores the City’s commitment to delivering accessible, safe, and user-friendly public and non-motorised transport infrastructure.

Located in the vibrant suburb of Cosmo City along South Africa Drive in Ward 100 of Region C, this 3.5km project spans from Malibongwe Drive to Russia Avenue. The key focus areas include improving pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure, enhancing public transport amenities, and ensuring universal access for all residents.

Key Features of the Project:

·       Construction of paved and asphalt sidewalks.

·       Installation of mini-bus taxi lay-bys and bus stop shelters.

·       Landscaping and general public environmental upgrades.

·       Provision of adequate walkways and street lighting.

·       Addressing localized stormwater issues to create a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists.

JDA CEO, Mr. Themba Mathibe, explained that, “The Cosmo City Super Stops and Non-Motorised Transport Facilities project is a vital investment in building an inclusive and connected city”.

“By prioritizing pedestrian safety, universal access, and environmentally conscious infrastructure, we are ensuring that all residents, regardless of their mode of transport, can navigate the city with ease and dignity,” he noted.

The project uses labour-intensive methods under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). This approach emphasizes job creation and income generation for local communities, reinforcing the City’s dedication to socio-economic upliftment through infrastructure development.

Promoting Sustainable Transport Solutions:

The design preserves the existing road geometry while adding much-needed taxi and bus lay-bys. Importantly, there are no relocations of existing traffic lights or changes to bell mouths, ensuring minimal disruption to current traffic operations.

The project also promotes sustainable transport solutions by integrating walking, cycling, and public transport options seamlessly.

Mr Mathibe concluded, “The JDA remains committed to delivering impactful, people-centered infrastructure that transforms urban spaces and enhances the quality of life for all Johannesburg residents.
