The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), the infrastructure arm of the City of Johannesburg, completed the rehabilitation and upgrade of the eastern stormwater channel and adjoining stormwater systems in Orange Grove, Norwood, and Patterson Park.
This transformative project is a key component of the Louis Botha Transit-Oriented Development Corridor’s Stormwater Master Plan. The project’s primary scope entailed rehabilitation and upgrade of the eastern stormwater channel as outlined in the project’s detailed layout plan.
However, during the rehabilitation of the culverts on the eastern channel, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo asked the JDA to include the rehabilitation of Patterson Park. This extension addressed the need to reconfigure the park’s general profile, including its slopes, following the completion of the stormwater channel upgrades.
The JDA enlisted the expertise of landscape architects to draft and supervise the park’s rehabilitation during construction. This approach ensured the restoration of Patterson Park and introduced new walkway links, modernised play equipment, and solar-powered charging docks and lighting. These improvements were designed to create a more accessible, safe, and environmentally friendly public space.
In alignment with the JDA’s commitment to local economic empowerment, the additional scope of work also created opportunities for local small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs). Five SMMEs were contracted through the main contractor, sharing a combined package worth R10 million. Additionally, the project provided employment for 29 local labourers, further reinforcing the JDA’s dedication to inclusive growth.
JDA CEO Themba Mathibe expressed his enthusiasm for the project’s success: “The completion of the eastern stormwater channel and Patterson Park rehabilitation reflects the JDA’s vision of building sustainable, resilient infrastructure that benefits communities. This project not only mitigates the risks associated with stormwater management but also delivers a revitalised Patterson Park that residents can enjoy. It is a testament to our commitment to creating spaces that foster inclusivity, connectivity, and sustainability.”
