JOBURG INVESTS R23 MILLION IN STORMWATER INFRASTRUCTURE IN BRAMFISCHERVILLE

The City of Joburg, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has launched a R23 million stormwater conversion project in Bramfischerville Ward 49 in Region C. This initiative aims to convert open drainage channels along Rio Grande Street into closed systems to enhance public safety and mitigate flooding risks.

The project, officially commenced on June 4, 2025, is scheduled for completion by August 27, 2025. It involves installing a 500-meter enclosed stormwater system using precast pipe culverts and rectangular portal culverts. This upgrade is designed to protect children, pedestrians, and motorists from the hazards associated with open channels during heavy rains.

In addition to improving infrastructure, the project supports local economic development by employing 20 participants from the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) and appointing a Community Liaison Officer. Furthermore, five Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) will be engaged to contribute to the project’s execution.

JRA CEO Mr Zweli Nyathi emphasized the importance of community involvement, urging residents to report infrastructure defects during the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) process for assessment and budgeting. He also called on the community to respect and maintain the new infrastructure, highlighting that collective responsibility is key to sustaining improvements.

This project reflects the City’s commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure and public safety through collaborative efforts with local communities.
