Recently, Library and Information Services (LIS), in partnership with Malvern Clinic, hosted a health awareness session at Malvern Library. The event brought together residents, including senior citizens, to learn more about managing chronic conditions and maintaining healthy lifestyles. The session created a welcoming space for open engagement with healthcare practitioners.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Thapelo Amad, encouraged residents to make full use of library services. “Libraries remain vital community hubs for knowledge, learning and enrichment, especially during holiday programmes,” he said.
Resident Regina Mbhele (80) shared her appreciation, noting that the session helped her better understand stress management and healthy eating. My biggest problem is stress management and eating the wrong food. I’m cutting down on sugar and red meat from now on. Thank you for teaching me about all this and saving my life!”
In Orange Farm, the local library partnered with the Tsebo Foundation to host an information literacy session for young adults. Participants were introduced to free online courses offered through Microsoft and Africa Tikkun, as well as the City’s OverDrive digital library services.
Libraries across Johannesburg also hosted engaging Easter holiday programmes. Activities ranged from storytelling and robotics at Johannesburg City Library to coding, egg hunts and outdoor games in Vlakfontein, and storytelling sessions at Eldorado Park Extension 5 Library.
These initiatives highlight the City’s ongoing commitment to promoting learning, wellness and community development through accessible library services.
