The City of Johannesburg’s Joburg Market is steadfast in its commitment to collective transformation through a robust portfolio of projects.

“The Joburg Market is deeply rooted in serving the people. Therefore, progress in our projects directly translates to progress for the individuals who rely on and use our facilities. It’s crucial to adapt and keep our citizens informed of all developments,” emphasises Lulama Ndlovu, the acting CEO of the Joburg Market. Exciting developments lie ahead for the entity, particularly with the latest advancements on site. One notable project currently underway is the sprinkler project, a multi-year endeavour aimed at compliance. This initiative involves supplying and installing three one-million-litre water tanks, along with reticulation to fire hydrants and potable water facilities.

Ndlovu explains: “This project carries numerous benefits, including meeting insurance requirements for fire compliance and providing backup water to our facilities in case of challenges with Johannesburg Water lines.”

The project has reached 75% completion, with phase one completed in December 2023, and phase two in the new financial year.

Another significant project is the Tshiamo Market, formerly known as Mandela Market.

This two-phased initiative aims to expand trading space and create a user-friendly environment for informal trading.

Phase one, focusing on the main trading structure, was completed, and launched in May 2023, while phase two, incorporating cold rooms, is expected to conclude by March 31, 2024.

The Gen-Farm project, categorised under alternative energy, entails the installation of six generators, enhancing the market’s capacity during power failures. This initiative was completed in October 2023, ensuring uninterrupted operation of market facilities.

Furthermore, the consignment control project, aimed at refurbishing the market’s entrance, has resulted in improved aesthetics and enhanced safety for staff and stakeholders.

This project was fully completed and handed over in November 2023.

Scheduled for completion by June 2024, the cold rooms – ammonia plant project addresses the refurbishment of aging assets, offering improved preservation capabilities for traders’ stock. Additionally, the pack house project, slated for completion by June 2024, aims to introduce previously disadvantaged groups to pre-packing space, enriching market diversity.

Ndlovu stresses that these projects signify positive developments intended to elevate the market’s facilities and premises for the benefit of all occupants.
