As part of Joburg Social Housing Company’s (JOSHCO) commitment to transparency and accessibility, acting CEO Nokwazi Mtshali announced the launch of a new initiative today, 30 October 2024, focused on providing Johannesburg residents with a comprehensive guide to the affordable housing application process. This initiative aims to simplify and clarify JOSHCO’s application requirements, making affordable rental housing more accessible to qualifying residents.
“This week, we’re introducing a step-by-step application guide tailored to assist prospective tenants with a clear and thorough understanding of our application process. Our goal is to ensure every eligible resident feels empowered to confidently navigate the steps required to secure a quality, affordable rental home through JOSHCO.” said Nokwazi Mtshali.
The initial application phase begins with a pre-screening registration, accessible via QR code or links on the JOSHCO website including, official social media platforms: Facebook (JOSHCO Rentals) and X, formerly Twitter (@MyJOSHCO), TikTok, WhatsApp Channel. During this phase, applicants must verify personal information, including ID numbers, contact details, and residential addresses. To qualify, applicants need a gross monthly income between R1,850 and R22,000, excluding overtime, and should avoid submitting duplicate registrations.
Following successful pre-screening, applicants will receive further instructions from a JOSHCO Leasing Administrator to submit essential documents. Each applicant is assigned a Unique Reference Number, which will serve as their tracking ID throughout the process.
“This systematic approach helps us ensure housing is provided to those who meet our criteria, maintaining fairness and accessibility across the board,” added Mtshali.
Once the vetting process confirms eligibility, approved applicants are required to make a deposit payment directly to JOSHCO’s official Standard Bank account (Account Number: 000197726), using their Unique Reference Number to confirm the transaction. Mtshali strongly advised applicants to avoid third-party intermediaries to reduce the risk of fraud.
New tenants will participate in an induction session upon final approval and deposit verification. This session will cover lease finalisation, unit selection, and key collection. JOSHCO emphasises that it operates solely as a rental housing provider and does not offer rent-to-own services. Each lease term lasts two years, with an option to renew, ensuring the organisation maintains high service standards and provides stable, quality housing.
New tenants will receive a Tenant Handbook, detailing their responsibilities, resources available, and payment protocols as outlined in their lease agreement.
