Rockville reverberated with joyous music as the community commemorated Nelson Mandela Day. The celebratory atmosphere brought together senior citizens, Grade R learners from Hoernle Primary School, the talented Eco Arts Youth Choir, city officials, and residents from both Rockville and Moroka.

The festivities commenced with a warm welcome from Regional Director Justice Ngalonkulu, who served as the programme director. He acknowledged esteemed guests, including the MMC for Community Development, Cllr Lubabalo Magwentshu, Section 79 Chair and committee members, board chairpersons, and senior citizens. Ngalonkulu expressed the region’s appreciation for MMC Magwentshu’s tireless dedication and commitment to the community.

A candle, lit in honour of Madiba, created a solemn moment of reverence for Nelson Mandela. The mood then shifted to celebration as the Eco Arts Choir’s harmonious voices filled the air with a powerful rendition of the national anthem. The crowd erupted in cheers and ululations, their appreciation evident as the choir’s beautiful music resonated throughout the venue.

Ward 33 Councillor Mpumi Mazibuko expressed her gratitude to all in attendance, including ward councillors and PR councillors, Hoernle Primary School students, and senior citizens. She reminded everyone of the “champion tree” planted by Nelson Mandela 16 years ago, urging all to uphold the spirit of Mandela Day and strive for self-improvement.

The highlight was a rendition of “Happy Birthday” to Madiba by the young learners from Hoernle Primary School. Their voices brought smiles and a sense of warmth to everyone’s hearts.

Cllr Magwentshu said: “Long live the undying spirit of Tata Nelson Mandela, long live!”

He emphasised the significance of Mandela Day, a day dedicated to honouring Mandela’s legacy of justice, equality, and humanity. He reflected on the symbolism of the champion tree planted by Mandela at Thokoza Park, representing life, growth, and resilience – qualities Mandela embodied.

He stressed the importance of community efforts, such as food gardens and tree planting, in combating climate change and building a better future.

“It is in your hands to make a better world for all who live in it,” said MMC Magwentshu.

The day culminated in a ceremonial tree planting and wreath laying.
