Executive Mayor Cllr Dada Morero led a large-scale clean-up operation, mobilising all City of Johannesburg service delivery and enforcement departments to restore cleanliness, order, and essential services across 11 inner-city wards.
As part of the initiative, City Power seized over 250kg of illegally connected cables from six businesses, tackling persistent electricity theft, which costs the City about R30,000 in daily revenue losses. Specialised teams conducted comprehensive meter audits, repaired faulty traffic lights, and addressed unplanned power outages in the inner city. Targeted operations in the central business district and Jeppestown uncovered multiple properties illegally connected to the electricity grid without formal metering.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency unblocked kerb inlets at End and Lilian Ngoyi streets, while work at Nugget and Plain streets revealed dislodged pipes requiring more extensive repairs. Efforts to resolve ongoing traffic signal issues in Ward 59 are also underway.
Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo deployed seven regional teams to clear overgrown vegetation, prune trees, and remove debris along main routes, enhancing public spaces for residents and commuters. Park rangers also assisted in removing abandoned informal structures and clearing heavily littered areas used by displaced persons, contributing to the broader revitalisation of the inner city.
The intensive six-week operation is a proactive effort to improve the daily experience of Joburg residents. Following its initial phase in the inner city, the initiative will extend to other regions across the City.
