Jozi Mayor appoints a spin-doctor
Gabu Tugwana is the Mayor’s spokesman in Jozi.
Seasoned journalist and former communication director, Gabu Tugwana in the City is the new spokesperson for the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba.
According to the statement released by the municipality, Tugwana has been appointed by Mashaba with immediate effect.
Mashaba welcomed Tugwana to his team and wished him well in his position.
“With his vast experience in the media sector and other community service commitments, which include serving on the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund as a trustee, he will be an invaluable addition to the team.”
The statement also revealed that Newspapers which he served on, were all vocal against human rights abuses prior to the 1994 democratic elections and in the early stages of the new political dispensation.

- Tugwana is a former journalist at various publications including the defunct Rand Daily Mail, The World and Weekend World and the community-based, nationally distributed New Nation.
- He also edited the New Nation with the late Zwelakhe Sisulu, and ANC stalwart, Walter Sisulu.
- He has been working for the City for 13 years in the Group Communication Department.
