On October 11, 2024, Gauteng Department of e-Government MEC Bonginkosi Dhlamini delivered his speech at the United Nations Digital Youth Tech Expo, marking the International Day of the Girl Child. In his speech, Dhlamini emphasized the role of technology in driving equality, particularly for young women in underserved communities.
The event, hosted by the United Nations Youth Theme Group, focused on empowering girls through digital literacy and skills, a cause closely aligned with the mission of the e-Government. “We are privileged to stand alongside the United Nations Youth Theme Group and other partners in celebrating this International Day of the Girl Child,” Dhlamini said. He highlighted how technology could be a crucial enabler for young women and called for collective efforts to bridge the digital divide.
Dhlamini also spoke on the department’s ongoing efforts to integrate data analytics into policymaking, ensuring that digital programs yield measurable, impactful results. “We are exploring innovative ways to integrate data analytics into our policy frameworks, which will help us measure the impact of our digital programs and refine them for an even more significant impact.”
The MEC further stressed the importance of digital inclusion, and the role young women can play as pioneers in the digital economy. “You are not just participants in a digital economy – you are pioneers of a future where technology is a tool for equality, empowerment, and growth,” he told the young audience.
He closed his speech by reaffirming the department’s commitment to providing young women in Gauteng with the skills, confidence, and resources they need to lead in the digital age. “Let’s continue to work together to break down barriers, inspire future leaders, and ensure that all young women in Gauteng have access to the resources and opportunities they deserve,” he concluded.
The event marked a significant step toward promoting digital empowerment for girls and fostering a future where technology serves as an equalizing force. Dhlamini’s speech reflected Gauteng’s dedication to nurturing a more inclusive, tech-driven society for all.
