Northern Cape

The people of Northern Cape could find themselves with a football team in the National First Division if Mainstay United are triumphant in the upcoming ABC Motsepe Play-offs.

United made  into the play-offs with a 3-2 aggregate over Warrenton Young Stars to be crowned ABC Motsepe League Provincial winners in the Northern Cape.

They joined Super Eagles from the Free State, Uthongathi FC coming out of KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga outfit Acornbush United.

Northern Cape has not had a team in the NFD in close to a decade and SAFA provincial secretary in the province Corrie Coetzee said United gives hope to the province.

“We were backing all the teams to go all the way. At this point, we have Mainstay and we hope that they will do well to represent the people of the Northern Cape.

“We truly believe that there is talent in the province for us to be well represented in the country’s top leagues. I think it has been eight years since we have had a team there and that is really unfortunate,” Coetzee said.

Mainstay United have improved tremendously as a team since they made headlines for the wrong reasons when they lost 9-1 to Ajax Cape Town during a Nedbank Cup fixture back in 2015.
