REVITALISING JOBURG CITY LIBRARY: A BEACON OF KNOWLEDGE RESTORED

Considerable progress has been made to revitalise the Johannesburg City Library into a safe, accessible, and functional space for all.

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Dada Morero, led a site inspection on Thursday, 23 January 2025, to the library. This visit provided insight into the restoration project spearheaded by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA). The library is set for a phased reopening, beginning with a partial launch in the first quarter of 2025 and full operation by mid-year.

During the visit, media representatives engaged with Mayor Morero, JDA CEO Themba Mathibe, and project officials to discuss the importance of this revitalisation effort for the city.

The City of Johannesburg, through the JDA, remains committed to reopening this vital community resource. Construction began in September 2024, starting with internal electrical reticulation, followed by upgrades to the air-conditioning and heating systems.

Key achievements so far include:

  • Water Tank Installation: The foundation for the first water tank is 98% complete. This pressurised system ensures reliable water flow for fire safety, meeting South African National Standards (SANS 10400-W).
  • Lighting Upgrades: Lighting has been modernised across all floors, with 90% of the work complete. These upgrades create an improved environment for reading, research, and study.
  • Fire Safety Compliance: Specialised pumps have been procured to address fire safety non-compliance issues. Rigorous testing is underway to ensure the sprinkler system and fire hydrants maintain optimal pressure, even when municipal water supply falls short.

The phased reopening will prioritise the ground floor and children’s reading section, with the remaining areas, including the basements and upper floors, scheduled to follow later in the year.

“The Johannesburg City Library is a cornerstone of our city’s cultural and intellectual heritage,” said Mathibe. “Through these restoration efforts, we are reigniting a beacon of knowledge and opportunity for our residents. Our commitment to safety, accessibility, and functionality ensures this treasured resource will once again serve as a welcoming space for all.”

This restoration reflects the City’s dedication to preserving its cultural assets while fostering a vibrant community hub for generations to come.
