RIVONIA-KATHERINE CORRIDOR UPGRADE PAVES WAY FOR REA VAYA PHASE 1C

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) will commence with the Rivonia-Katherine Corridor Road Strengthening Project, a vital component of the City of Johannesburg’s Rea Vaya Phase 1C infrastructure rollout.

Located in Sandton’s Ward 103 and Ward 91, the project focuses on strengthening about 1.7km of Katherine Street between Rivonia Road and Pretoria Avenue. This corridor, featuring three lanes in each direction, is being upgraded to accommodate bus traffic and ensure the long-term durability of the route.

The work is running concurrently with the construction of two Rea Vaya BRT stations in Sandton, enabling phased implementation and paving the way for the commissioning of the entire Phase 1C system.

To minimise the impact caused to the public, road users and pedestrians, the public is requested to please be aware that traffic impact will be taking place in this area from the 27 January 2025, with an anticipated construction period of 10 months.

Project details:

  • Affected wards: Ward 91 and Ward 103
  • Scope: Dedicated BRT lanes, two mixed-traffic lanes per direction, and improved roadside drainage and sidewalks.
  • Status: Contractor appointed
  • Duration: 10 months
  • Commencing: 27 January 2025

The road-strengthening activities will include traffic accommodation, road signage and marking, roadside drainage maintenance, excavation, and the construction of new road pavement layers and sidewalks. This work will be undertaken with utmost care to minimise disruption to businesses, taxi associations, and residents.

Themba Mathiba, CEO of the JDA, emphasied the significance of the project: “The Rivonia-Katherine Corridor Road Strengthening Project is a cornerstone of our efforts to deliver safe, reliable, and accessible public transport solutions. It reflects our commitment to improving urban infrastructure while creating job opportunities and enhancing the urban environment.”

The City of Johannesburg has been planning, designing, and implementing the bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor for Phase 1C. The introduction of Rea Vaya Phase 1C will bring safe, affordable and reliable public transport to Joburg CBD, Hillbrow, Bellevue, Yeoville, Orange Grove, Cheltondale, Highlands North, Balfour Park, Gresswold, Bramley, Wynberg, Alexandra, Marlboro, Athol, Sandton, Sandown, Longmeadow, and Greenstone.

Out of the 12 stations planned in line with the BRT Phase 1C master plan, 10 stations have reached practical completion and are ready for use. The final 2 stations are currently under construction, and JDA is prioritising their completion to enable the commissioning of the entire Phase 1C system.

Three key bridges, Rea Vaya bus and pedestrian bridge located along Lees Street in Marlboro, dedicated cycling and walking bridge by Grayston Drive and Heritage bridge in the Berea area, close to the old Herbert Baker bus station have been built and ready for the operations of Rea Vaya Phase 1C buses.

The route will have 141 low entry buses, an interchange by Pan Africa connecting Rea Vaya with other modes of public transport and two depots – one in Alexandra where buses will be parked and maintained, and another in Selby.

The project was phased according to budget availability, beginning with the construction of a blueprint station on Katherine Street, which set the groundwork for the rest of the infrastructure works in Sandton.
