SuperSport crowned Nedbank Cup Champions

A brace by Bradley Grobler and goals from Jeremy Brockie and Kingston Nkhatha ensured SuperSport United lifted the Nedbank Cup trophy when they beat Orlando Pirates 4-1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night.

Although Pirates skipper, Oupa Manyisa netted for Pirates through a penalty, the goal was not enough as they finished their 2016/17 Premier Soccer League season empty handed.

The Soweto giants started like a house on fire as they probed for an early goal, but Thabo Matlaba’s shot went wide in the tenth minute.

Eight minutes later, Amtsantsantsa A Pitori nearly claimed the lead as Grobler missed the target after attacking a cross from Thabo Mnyamane down the left wing.

In the 32nd minute Grobler did give Stuart Baxter’s men the lead when he easily finished a cross from Grant Kekana on the right wing, 1-0.

With the Soweto giants pushing for an equaliser in the 39th minute, Williams was called to action and produced a million dollar save to deny Wome from a close range.

It was 1-0 at halftime for the Tshwane side.

Upon their return, the defending champions continued with the same energy and were awarded a penalty when Happy Jele fouled Thuso Phala in the box in the 53rd minute.

Mpontshane, though, was in a fine form to deny Brockie from the spot-kick to ensure his side remained in the game.

Despite his disappointing penalty, Brockie made amends when he made it 2-0 in the 61st minute as he headed home a cross from the right wing.

Three minutes later, United made it 3-0 when Grobler completed his brace when he converted a brilliant pass from Phala on the edge of the box to beat Mpontshane.

Just after the 70th minute, Thamsanqa Gabuza nearly pulled one back for the Ghost when his effort from a header went inches over the cross bar.

United, though, were not done as substitute Nkhatha made it 4-0 after clinically converting a Phala cross from the left.

Pirates did manage to find a consolation goal when they were awarded a penalty after Aubrey Modiba fouled Luvuyo Memela in the box. Oupa Manyisa scored the penalty for the Soweto giants, 4-1.
