Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) has been on high alert since the onset of the seasonal rainstorms that are sweeping through the city. The greening entity responsible for the city’s trees cape is urging residents to stay vigilant and be patient as we clear fallen street trees that impact motorists and pedestrians. Excessive rainscan over-saturate the soil around the base of the tree, causing erosion and affecting the tree’s stability. More importantly, pedestrians are requested to avoid taking shelter under a tree especially during a lightning storm.
JCPZ has 24-hour emergency standby teams to expedite the removal of uprooted trees that have damaged property, obstructed main routes,caused infrastructural damage to powerlines or blocked walkways.
With approximately 3.6 million street trees in the care of JCPZ and an estimated 10 (ten) million trees in private properties, some of Joburg’s aging street trees may be vulnerable to inclement weather. Residents are,however, reminded that street trees,even during a downpour,play a vital role in our environment by reducing erosion and providing a habitat for wildlife; and are protected by stringent bylaws. Residents are urged to comply with the street trees bylaws, refrain from felling or pruning trees, set leaves alight at the base of a tree and request assistance with the maintenance of the street trees, outside their homes. It should also be noted that residents are responsible for clearing uprooted trees on private properties.
JCPZ is mindful of the inconvenience and iskindly requesting residents to be patient as the greening entity systematically removes tree debris. During this period, JCPZ will prioritize only emergencies related top-rooted trees and fallen, large branches.
All emergency and general, non-emergency requests for tree pruning need to be escalated to Joburg Connect on 011 375 5555 by selecting option 0 (zero) or forward an email to joburgconnect@joburg.org.za. Residents will receive a reference number to ensure that general maintenance requests are responded to within 21 days.
