The much-anticipated inauguration and draw of the 2024 Tsalanang Games unfolded on this week, heralding a month-long celebration of community, football, and solidarity. Set to start on 2 March and end on 1 April (Easter Monday), the 2024 Tsalanang Games will grace the renowned Tsalanang Pub Grounds in Braamfischer.

Solomon “Solly” Leshabane, the visionary behind Tsalanang Pub and the event’s organiser, said the core objective was giving back to the community while nurturing a sense of togetherness among football aficionados.

Open to all eager participants, registration entails a nominal fee. By the launch date, an impressive 48 clubs had already enrolled, underscoring the burgeoning popularity and fervour within the community.

Emphasising simplicity and commitment, Leshabane urged participants to uphold the essence of the sport. The victorious team stands to claim a significant prize of R150,000, serving as a compelling incentive for zealous contenders.

Community games thrive on streamlined administration and a commitment to fair play. To uphold the integrity of the games, participating clubs vowed to adhere rigorously to fair play regulations. Instances of disruptive behaviour will be swiftly addressed, with players and teams engaging in unsportsmanlike conduct facing disqualification and immediate suspension.

Leshabane warned against unruly conduct, enforcing a zero-tolerance policy. “No tolerance for unruly behaviour. Any player tarnishing the games’ reputation will face expulsion, alongside their entire team.”

Themba Tshabalala, from Jozi FM, demonstrated steadfast support for the community games by conducting a professional draw during the inauguration, elevating the event and ensuring a seamless commencement of proceedings.

The defending champions, Looky Land Football Club from Emdeni in Soweto, graced the launch and were drawn first. As a token of appreciation, the team received a complete playing kit. Sfiso Zungu, Looky Land FC’s proprietor, exuded confidence in their preparedness, affirming: “We are poised to clinch this tournament. The team is primed, and we eagerly anticipate the games.”

Highlighting the competition’s transparency, Zungu commended the organisers for delivering on commitments without delay or complication. He singled out Thabo Hadebe, a 24-year-old player, as one to watch during the tournament.

Kgomotso Mogashoa, a City of Johannesburg representative at the games, asked about the significance of community games.

Mzwakhe Hlongwane responded: “I am elated because they unearth talent. Enhancing security and safety for players and clubs will yield significant benefits.”

With anticipation mounting, the inaugural whistle of the 2024 Tsalanang Games will reverberate through the Tsalanang Pub Grounds at 10am on 2 March 2024. PSU FC and Tshakuma FC will set the stage for a month filled with exhilarating football, community camaraderie, and amicable competition.
