Linda Nkosi is grateful for his win in the Employee Innovation Award Challenge under the category of performance management and group talent acquisition. “I am overwhelmed by the response I received for my idea. I entered the idea before building the system, so when they called me to present, I had two weeks to work on an actionable idea. Today, I can say I succeeded, and I am grateful because God is always good,” he says.
Linda’s win not only signifies his exceptional idea but also potential future contributions and innovative approaches to critical areas within the municipality.
His submission involved designing an automated performance management system that seamlessly integrates with Human Resource Management Systems and leverages data analytics to set key performance indicators, provide coaching, recommend training, and streamline the review process without constant intervention from line managers.
“The automated system reduces administrative tasks and can measure and educate employees in alignment with their deliverables and job descriptions while eliminating the paper-based portion of the process,” Linda explains.
He says that the project is currently in the pilot stage and will be implemented if it proves successful and fits the City’s framework and employee relations model.
“If the pilot is successful, I envision having a team to help implement the process, including building relevant and cloud-based infrastructure,” Linda says.
He says the system’s most prominent benefit is creating and maintaining real efficiency, fairness, and most importantly, a City that emphasises training world-class employees who can excel in other city departments or change jobs. Employees will be knowledgeable and have the best experience in their field.
Linda recently celebrated his five-year milestone as an employee of the City. He works within the Transport Department in the finance section under accounting and reporting, dealing with financial data.
He says winning the Employee Innovation Challenge makes him feel heard and valued for his ideas, which is incredibly motivating.
“It fosters a culture of openness, collaboration, and innovation where employees feel empowered to contribute their unique perspectives and creativity. When employees know that their ideas are welcomed and appreciated, they’re more likely to actively engage in problem-solving, think outside the box, and go the extra mile to drive positive change within the organisation,” he says.
Linda encourages other employees to participate in these opportunities, describing it as a life-changing experience and an achievement that no one can take away from you.
