The Tshiamo Market, a subsidiary trading hall at the Joburg Market has officially opened its doors to informal traders and the public.
The newly refurbished market, which used to be called the Mandela People’s Market, was officially unveiled on Friday, 26 May in City Deep by the Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Economic Development, Cllr Nomoya Mnisi, and Cllr Dada Morero, the MMC for Finance.
Cllr Mnisi is thrilled to see the project come to fruition.
“The upgrade and improvement of the Tshiamo market will ensure all standards are met regarding new buildings, process flow for fresh produce, food security, and health compliance, and make this new market facility a safe and inviting place for visitors, existing and new,” she said.
Tshiamo market, located in Block D at the Joburg Market, provides an additional 2 600 square metres of modernised trading floor space with 94 storage units, an upgraded taxi rank, ablution facilities, and an opportunity for NGOs and churches to use the easily accessible building.
Solomon Mphakathi, the acting CEO of the Joburg Market, said the municipal entity was committed to being a smart, globally competitive fresh-produce trading hub.
Mphakathi said the City was excited to launch the long-awaited project.
“This state-of-the-art facility and its aesthetics add value to the Joburg Market and play a significant role in the market’s value chain with informal traders.”
He said the entire Joburg Market campus will benefit from the state-of-the-art Tshiamo facility and improve working conditions for tenants.
MMC Morero said the official launch of the new facility will accelerate economic growth and ensure informal traders’ needs are met, as “they are major economic boosts”.
“Tshiamo market will promote transformation and the transfer of skills, while creating opportunities for informal traders and young farmers to eradicate unemployment,” said Morero.
Linda Yizani, one of the informal traders who will be allocated a stall in the market says she is excited and thankful to the City for the initiative that is inclusive in creating opportunities for the youth in Johannesburg.
