YOUR JOBURG HOLIDAY GUIDE

 Brümilda Swartbooi

From a night under Christmas lights to gorgeous views at the City’s parks, Johannesburg has something for everyone. It’s finally the holiday season! If you’re wondering what to do and where to go, Johannesburg has plenty to offer.

Johannesburg, also called the City of Gold, is the second largest city in South Africa, and it features a wide selection of top-rated attractions, tours, and activities you can enjoy. You will not be disappointed because it will tick all your boxes of things to do while on holiday, a visit to a historical site, a meal at a first-class restaurant, a walk in a park, an expedition to a museum, and even a tour on public transportation.

Don’t miss the enchanting Joburg Zoo Festival of Lights this December! The annual event hosted by the Joburg Theatre in association with the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, and the City of Power, is the perfect event for a family evening out. You can expect delicious foods, spectacular lights and splendid performances by Belinda Davids, Booshle G, Russian Youth Ballet and Bongi Archi to name a few.

Tickets are available at R 75 for kids aged between 3 and 12, R 100 for pensioners and R175 for adults and kids over 12. But remember kids younger than 3 enter for free. Visit https://www.joburgtheatre.com/festival-of-lights-at-joburg-zoo-info/ to book your ticket now.

There’s a variety of facilities at the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) that will keep you and your family amused. The 22 nature reserves, the 15 bird sanctuaries and the ravishing scenery throughout their 2343 parks will leave you astounded. You can pack a picnic basket and enjoy a romantic date next to the Emmarentia Dam or take the children for a fun day in the sun at the botanical gardens. And don’t forget about the most popular tourist attraction, the Joburg Zoo. The Zoo is proud to house over 300 species of animals.

So take a moment this December and visit the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo’s facilities. An educational excursion to a few historical attractions will keep the young ones entertained. The Johannesburg Art Gallery and the Constitutional Hill Human Rights Precinct Museum will have some of the most inspiring South African stories to tell.

Or perhaps you’re looking for something more thrilling? If so, Gold Reef City Casino and Theme Park is the place to be. A tagline on their website precisely identifies what they do, and what you can expect when visiting Gold Reef City, “let us entertain you…it’s what we do.” Tickets are only available for purchase online.

If you want to see more of the city, hop on the city’s red sightseeing bus which will take you around Joburg’s finest attractions. And if you want to experience the nightlife, make sure to visit any of the nightclubs in Maboneng, Newtown, Sandton and Rosebank or Midrand.

The Soweto Towers, also called the bungee jumping centre of Soweto, is a favourite tourist destination. When you’re done there, you should visit other favourite destinations like, The Mandela House, Hector Pieterson Museum and Vilakazi Street.

There’s something for everyone in the city. Get out there!
