ARTISTS TO CURATE PUBLIC ART FOR THE JOHANNESBURG CITY LIBRARY WATER TANK AND PUMP

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) invites artists to contribute to a public art project that will enhance the urban landscape and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Johannesburg. This initiative is part of the City of Johannesburg’s long-standing public art and placemaking programme, which adds unique identity and expression to public spaces.

THE PROJECT

As part of the renovations and fire protection system upgrades at the Johannesburg City Library (JCL), a new water tank and pump installation will be positioned outside this iconic heritage building.

The JDA is calling for creative minds to curate public art that will cover and visually integrate the tank and pump into the urban fabric, helping to minimize their visual impact while reflecting the library’s history.

CONCEPT AND INSPIRATION

With the JCL being a significant heritage building, the proposed artwork must draw from the oral and written history of the library and the City of Johannesburg. The evaluation of submissions will focus on artists’ themes that reflect the library’s role as a knowledge hub, historical monument, and cultural beacon in the heart of Johannesburg. Additionally, the selection will consider the use of materials that closely match the library’s façade.

6.     Selection Process:

Proposals will be reviewed by a panel of experts from the JDA and the Johannesburg City Library. The selected artist will be notified.

PROJECT CONTEXT

The water tank and pump are essential new installations to ensure compliance with the City’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) by-laws and National Building Regulations. This work is part of the second phase of renovations to the JCL.

On behalf of the City of Johannesburg’s Community Development Department, the JDA is undertaking critical upgrades to the library, including roof repairs, fire protection systems, and building compliance measures. These efforts will ensure the library’s partial reopening to the public in 2025.
