COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TAKES NEW FORMS WITH MMC MAGWENTSHU

Councillor Lubabalo Cecil Magwentshu, the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development in the City of Joburg, is spearheading a transformative approach to community development.

Balancing his roles as a dedicated husband to Nolubabalo Philiswa, father of six, and political leader in the African Transformation Movement (ATM), Magwentshu remains committed to creating a harmonious blend of a successful career and personal life.

Born and raised in the rural village of Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape, Cllr Magwentshu draws inspiration from his uncle, Sabelo Magwentshu’s political journey, which propelled him into a path of student activism during his time at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, where he obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree.

Armed with a Rhodes University qualification earned in 2001,  Magwentshu’s political involvement steadily grew as he served in various leadership positions within political structures. This led to his appointment as the City’s Section 79 Committee Chairperson for Health and Social Development in 2022.

Beyond his political pursuits, Cllr Magwentshu boasts a strong corporate background, having worked in various roles for Transnet between 2001 and 2009. He also worked as a lecturer at Ingwe TVET in the Eastern Cape, specialising in accounting, between 2010 and 2012, and held positions in other prominent South African corporations.

Throughout his life,  Magwentshu has dedicated himself to serving the community and improving the lives of those around him.

“Looking back, I remember vividly spending my own money to help students, especially those from vulnerable families, to instill in them hope for a brighter future,” he says.

His commitment to youth development led to initiatives such as the launch of the City’s Netball Fridays and the opening of the Lehae Library, southwest of Johannesburg, which provides locals with a conducive space for studying. These endeavours aim to provide accessible resources, safe spaces, and opportunities for the City’s youth, particularly women in sport.

“I am always willing to go the extra mile to make life better for others.”

His plans include constructing additional sports facilities in each region of Johannesburg and enhancing the accessibility and effectiveness of libraries.

Magwentshu also envisions building a recreational centre in Lehae to improve the quality of life in the community and improving the parking area at the Joburg Theatre.

As the MMC for Community Development, Magwentshu is committed to addressing the physical, emotional, mental, and artistic needs of Johannesburg’s residents. He promises to prioritise the well-being of the people and contribute meaningfully to creating a brighter tomorrow for all.

“The youth need a flame of inspiration to be more active and develop positive habits that they will carry into adulthood. It is crucial for the community to work together for youth development,” he notes.

Magwentshu’s charismatic personality, infectious smile, and dedication to community development have earned him the admiration and respect of his colleagues, making his office a positive and uplifting work environment.

His revolutionary mindset centres around building trust, respect, and productive changes within the community.
