RANDBURG AND EMMARENTIA LIBRARIES EMPOWER COMMUNITY WITH DIGITAL LITERACY EVENT

In celebration of South African Library Week, Randburg and Emmarentia libraries collaborated with Randburg Square to host a digital literacy event at the shopping centre recently.

South African Library Week provided the backdrop for this event, which brought together residents and avid readers to underscore the vital role of libraries in fostering knowledge and community cohesion while meeting the educational needs of the residents.

Librarians Matete Lesele and Lindani Sikhakhane from Randburg Library, along with Njabulo Mdunge from Emmarentia Library, eagerly assisted attendees in signing up for a variety of free online courses available on the Joburg Libraries’ website, cojelearning.org.za. These courses, including Microsoft Office certification provided by Microsoft and Afrika Tikkun, as well as Google-accredited courses in Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Digital Marketing, and Project Management, offered participants opportunities to expand their skill sets and embark on new educational journeys.

Recognising the increasing importance of digital literacy, the librarians also provided insights into online safety practices, educating attendees on safeguarding personal information, identifying online threats, and navigating the internet securely.

“The event also served as a gateway for individuals to access the library’s resources by signing up for a free membership card. This enabled them to borrow books, access digital materials, and participate in various library programmes and services,” said Lesele.

As a token of appreciation for the community’s support, attendees were treated to complimentary fiction and non-fiction books, catering to diverse literary tastes.

The event highlighted the pivotal role of libraries in empowering individuals, fostering social cohesion, and promoting lifelong learning.
